I am a biker. I like to wear leather vests when I ride my Harley; however, my vests are sized such that I am not able to snap them shut when I ride and prevent the front panels from flapping in the wind and beating me to death. Many bikers have that situation -- like me, they like to wear a vest but have it open in the front to allow wind to blow through, but keep the front panels held together to prevent them from flapping.
That is why vest extenders were invented. Vest extenders are made of leather or chains, and are intended to connect from the female snap on one side to the male snap on the other. Extenders are usually 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10cm) long. A biker attaches one extender to each matching set of snaps, and uses two, three, or four extenders for the vest depending on how the vest is made, how far apart the snaps are, how long the front of the vest is, and his style preferences.
You can buy vest extenders from many retailers, including on-line vendors. Below are some photos of me wearing various vests that I own with different types of extenders.
